Understanding Business Energy Contracts
Choosing the right energy contract for your business is key to managing costs effectively. Here’s a quick guide to the main types of business energy contracts:
Non-Half Hourly (NHH) Contracts
Suited for small to medium-sized businesses, non-half hourly contracts are usually fixed price contracts and billed to your meter readings either via a smart meter or you providing readings. While less precise than HH contracts, they are simpler and more flexible for companies with moderate energy demands.
Half Hourly (HH) Contracts
Designed for businesses with high energy usage, half-hourly meters record your energy consumption every 30 minutes. This provides accurate data, ensuring you’re billed for exactly what you use. These contracts are mandatory for businesses with a supply load of 69kva or higher, usually large retailers, hotels, data centres, hospitals or manufacturers. These are slightly more complex and often require a separate meter operator contract. (see blog).
Flexible (Flex) Contracts
Flex contracts are tailored for businesses wanting more control over their energy costs. They allow you to purchase energy in smaller blocks, taking advantage of market fluctuations. This is perfect for businesses that want to and have the time to actively manage energy prices however suppliers only tend to offer these to businesses that use over a certain threshold such as 10 Gigawatts per year (10 million kwh’s).
Portfolio Contracts
Portfolio contracts are an arrangement where multiple business sites or locations are grouped together under a single energy contract, typically to benefit from collective purchasing power and simplified management. It’s often used by businesses with multiple premises or a group of companies managed centrally.
